2. Section 2, Lessons Learned: Commander's Observations, Evaluations, and Recommendations:

a. Personnel: None

b. Intelligence:

(1) Deployment of PSID personnel sensing device:

(a) Observations: The PSID has been in use at Plei Mrong a relatively short period of time. Due to lack of experience in deployment, the sensor has often been emplanted on line a short distance from the perimeter. Because of their proximity to personnel on the firebase, the sensitivity level of the sensor has had to be turned down to prevent false activation.

(b) Evaluation: The PSID has been found to have a capability of detecting the seismic disturbance of a person walking 200 meters from the sensor, on a line of sight basis. This type of sensor tends to report false activations because of its high sensitivity.

(c) Recommendations: The PSID should be deployed in the outer strands of concertina and used particularly in the area of the perimeter which guards have difficulty in observing and along likely avenues of approach. The range of each sensor should overlap with another, and they should be staggered so that movement by an intruder will be reported in a series by a number of sensors. The operator can then differentiate between a false activation and an intruder as well as estimate the location of the intruder by the sequence in which the sensors are activated.
