In July of 1972 Lieutenant Colonel Thomas P. McHugh took command of 1/926. In 1974 LTC McHugh gave command of 1/92d to Lieutenant Colonel Gustav T. Lydahl. 1 July 1986 withdrawn from the Combat Arms Regimental System and reorganized under the United States Army Regimental System with Headguarters at Fort Hood, Texas. 8 July 1982 Lieutenant Colonel Beverly W. July 1986 the Battalion was inactivated, except Charlie Battery, which was redesignated as Battery A, 92d Field Artillery Regiment under the United States Army Regimental System. As the lowest lettered unit of the regiment, Battery A served as the standard bearer for the colors. On December 9, 1987 Brigadier General (Ret.) William Robards Buster, (the first Commander of Battery A, 92d Field Artillery and the fourth Commander of the 92d FA Battalion) was installed as Honorary Colonel of the 92d Field Artillery Regiment. Command Sergeant Major (Ret.) William Patrick O'Brien was appointed Honorary Sergeant Major. Colonel (Ret.) Gustav T. Lydahl (Commander 1/92d 1970) was granted and assigned the distinction of Distinguished Member of the 92d Field Artillery Regiment. December 1989, in a ceremony at Fort Hood, Brigadier General (Ret.) William Robards Buster was re-appointed Honorary Regimental Commander of the 92d Field Artillery Regiment. Robert Clifford Pryor (B Battery and HQ 92d AFA) was appointed Honorary Sergeant Major.

Charles R. Gall, founder of the 92d Artillery Association (Survey Section 1/92d Vietnam 1969-71) was granted and assigned the distinction of Distinguished Member of the 92d Field Artillery Regiment. January 1990 Captain David F. Creamer took A/92d to Germany as part of Reforger exercises. May 1990 Captain Edward Hughes took Command of A/92d from Captain David F. Creamer. May 31 through June 2, 1990 A/92d was host to a reunion of 92d veterans as part of 2d A.D.'s 50th Anniversary. This was a unique opportunity for the current Redlegs of A/92d to interact with the veterans of their Unit. They were able to learn about the history their predecessors wrote and to hear of their experiences under fire. The reunion also gave the veterans a chance to meet the young soldiers, learn about their training, see the new MLRS equipment and observe a Combined Arms Live-fire Exercise (CALFAX). The Regimental Tree was planted by James "Top" Rigdon (1/92d "B" 6 "HHB" Vietnam), and the Regiment held a Memorial Service in the Division Artillery Chapel.
